Les Grandes Vies: Joséphine Baker by Alice Babin & Camille de Cussac

For kids ages 8 and up

Freda Josephine McDonald was born in 1906 in the segregated South (St. Louis, Missouri). At age 19, she moved to Paris, where she became the star of Les Folies Bergères and the face of the Roaring Twenties. She married a French industrialist in 1937 and became both a French citizen and an active agent of the Resistance.

When the 1960s rolled around, Joséphine Baker became an avid supporter of the Civil Rights Movement in the US. This exceptional performer was also a hero of WWII and a passionate advocate for human rights, women’s rights, and civil rights. She adopted and cared for 12 children in an attempt to create a world where everyone is free and respected, regardless of skin color or gender.

Les Grandes Vies: Henry David Thoreau by Elisabeth Combres & Sylvie Bessard

For kids ages 8 and up

The philosopher Henry David Thoreau led his life in accordance with his principles. He believed that work meant subjugation, so he worked just enough to survive. He believed that we were indissolubly linked to nature, so he walked in the forest every day and lived in a lakeside cabin for two years.

Confronted with injustice, Thoreau refused to obey. His actions gave rise to the principle of civil disobedience, a mode of nonviolent resistance that would later be adopted by Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Heed Thoreau’s invitation for a simple life tied closely to the natural world to help you discover who you are.
