A History of Couple-hood

Author and psychoanalyst Éric Smadja will discuss the fundamental psychological and sociological characteristics of contemporary couples with Princeton University professor Rubén Gallo, based on Smadja’s latest book, The Couple: A Pluridisciplinary Approach (Routledge).

Our speakers will explore and question the connection between the modern-day couple and contemporary societies, combining psychoanalytic and sociological approaches.

Éric Smadja is a psychiatrist, a psychoanalyst, a member of the Société Psychanalytique de Paris and of the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA), a couples psychoanalyst, and also an anthropologist and associate member of the American Anthropological Association. In 2007, he was awarded the IPA’s Prize for “Exceptional Contribution Made to Psychoanalytic Research”.

Rubén Gallo is a Professor in Language, Literature and Civilization of Spain at Princeton University. He is the author, most recently, of Conversación en Princeton (2017), with Mario Vargas Llosa.
